Sidaway Bridge Necklace
Sidaway Bridge Necklace
Pendent is 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches of stainless steel and is hypoallergenic. The necklace is rainbow chain made out of stainless steel.
During the Hough Riots in 1966 the Sidaway bridge was vandalized. Some of the plank wooden boards of the walkway were removed and set on fire on the Slavic Village entrance of the bridge, so no one on the Kinsmen side of the bridge could enter again. The boards were never repaired or replaced, the bridge was just left in disrepair and neglect for the past 55 years. This bridge is important to me because to me it reflects the elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge. Elephant representing how America was built on the system of slavery and a part of that system is reflected in the land still today.
“In 1976, federal district court judge Frank Battisti, in the course of issuing his busing order to desegregate Cleveland’s public schools, cited the closing of the Sidaway Bridge as evidence that city and school officials had worked in concert to segregate the schools on the basis of race.”
I hope in my artwork it represents the importance and meaning of the site by shining a light on it. Sidaway Bridge is the first and only 675 feet pedestrian suspension bridge in Cleveland. Acknowledging the Sidaway Bridge and its history and its power to bridge divides and connect communities. We can’t move forward without learning from the past. This pendent is a conversation starter to bring awareness.
